This week’s series of tragic events is another terrible reminder of the important work ahead of everyone, in all communities, to achieve an equitable and just country that lifts up all Americans. Again this week we are called to address the stark reality that the Black Lives Matter movement raises. We must be a country that values everyone regardless of the color of their skin, birthplace or who they love, and we cannot rest until we are that community.
My heart breaks for the senseless losses of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, and for the fallen and injured police officers in Dallas who were protecting a peaceful protest and rally in their community.
But our heartbreak must drive action. Let’s follow the example of the good people of Dallas who organized the powerful and peaceful community conversation about race and police relations in our country before it was cut short by the horrific actions of a few, and commit ourselves to continuing this important conversation.
